Governor Deal, GDOT and SRTA Break Ground on Two Metro Atlanta Express Lane Projects

Governor Nathan Deal and representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation, the State Road and Tollway Authority and state and local community leaders recently broke ground on two Express Lanes projects designed to provide more reliable travel in Metro Atlanta.

Officials turned the first sod for the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes project on
September 17. The Northwest Corridor Express Lanes project will add approximately 30 miles of new barrier-separated, reversible managed lanes running along I-75 from Akers Mill Road to Hickory Grove Road and from the I-75/575 interchange to Sixes Road in Cobb and Cherokee counties. Two weeks later on October 6, the official groundbreaking for the I-75 South Metro Express Lanes project took place in Stockbridge. The I-75 South Metro Express Lanes will add a12-mile stretch of barrier-separated, reversible managed lanes located in the median between State Route 155 and State Route 138 on I-75 in Henry and Clayton counties.

Governor Deal emphasized the economic benefits to the State when speaking on the Northwest Corridor project. "This project will create new commute options for motorists and boost our state's economic development efforts, as maintaining a strong transportation system is a key component to attracting new business to our state," said the Governor.

He also stressed the importance of how the I-75 South Metro Express Lanes project would provide more choices for Georgians that travel south of Atlanta. "These 12 miles will be one of those major congestion relievers to Clayton and to Henry counties, said Deal. "We will be able to accommodate special occasions such as we recently had with the NASCAR event, which creates a lot of traffic around that specific sports activity."

The I-75 South Metro project is scheduled to open in early 2017, while the Northwest Corridor project is targeted for completion in Spring 2018. These new lanes will operate with same variable toll rate pricing used on the I-85 Express Lanes, with rates adjusting based on demand. Your Peach Pass will provide access to these and any future Georgia Express Lanes.
